Vintage 2009 Sans Barrique has been naturally produced with an emphatic fruit purity and minerality. Great length from tantalizingly luscious acidity. Strong hints of peach and kiwi fruit with a few drops of lemon! Forward and appealing, perfectly suited for those who find wooded Chardonnays too powerful.Un-oaked Chardonnays from France often have a “flinty” note, sometimes described as “gout de pierre a fusil” These are grown on Kimmeridge clay. The rich characteristic of this Bouchard Finlayson Sans Barrique also stems from clay based soils at the wonderful vineyard location in the Elandskloof Valley of Villiersdorp. Heavy clay and stony soils, un-irrigated with their excellent winter chill factor, all contribute to a very popular “terroir” influence on this wine.

Near the Southernmost point of Africa lies a valley named Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) framed by mountains and within sight of the ocean, with frost free, soft, beneficial weather and the most perfect clay shale vineyard soils.... Bouchard Finlayson is situated in the wine ward of Walker Bay, mid way between Cape point (Cape Town) and Cape Agulhas (the most southerly tip of Africa). The climate of Walker Bay is largely influenced by the nearby, cold Atlantic Ocean rendering it one of the coolest wine growing areas in the Cape. The Hemel-en-Aarde valley, home to Bouchard Finlayson, is central to Walker Bay. The valley is surrounded and sheltered by a mountain barrier, formed by Galpin Peak (810 meters) and the Tower of Babel (1200 meters), which traps the cloud cover and moisture in from the sea by the prevailing wind. Summer conditions are consequently warm rather than hot, and winter conditions are mild and frost-free.
