Paul Cluver Close Encounter Riesling 2010 Elgin

Tasting Notes:
Available in cases of 6 only. Based on the residual sugar level, it can be described as midway between German Kabinet and Spatlese in style. The colour is pale, with a beautiful green apple tint. The nose is quite expressive with flavours ranging from Granny Smith apple and lime, to citrus peel, with gentle floral tones. The palate is well balanced with great interplay between the naturally retained residual sugar and the acidity. Lovely luscious, creamy mouthfeel. Will age beautifully. Quite a versatile wine and a welcome alternative for the Sauvignon blanc- and Chardonnay- weary palates. Works well with spicy food and is great with sushi. Carpaccio and beef tartar are interesting partners too.

The Cluver family bought the Elgin farm in 1896 to provide summer grazing for their livestock and in the mid 1900's it became a strong apple producing region. In the mid 1980's the area was identified as a cool climate wine-growing region which led to the first Cluver plantings in 1986 with Paul Cluver cellar being the first to be established in Elgin.
